Detecting Riverine Plastic Litter in Indonesia through Satellite Imaging for Pollution Modeling and Mitigation.
For an Indonesian case study, we showed that large accumulations, and a target containing high concentration of
riverine plastic litter, can be detected by satellite. Clustering of the plastic and other debris classes in the feature
space of simple spectral indices gives confidence that plastic, and mixtures with plastic, can be separated from other endmembers, but this remains to be tested along the river, as well as in different rivers. The first follow-up step is that we will test the sensitivity of thresholding to the background with spectrally favourable very-high resolution data. The second step is upscaling with cloud-based big data processing. For this a targeted one-day hackathon will be organised. We use the results to support the modelling and support effort to reduce the pollution problem.
