Developing a text mining toolbox for retrieving global groundwater data.

Text mining is a cutting-edge AI technology that can extract high-quality information from text. It uses natural

language processing and machine learning methods to extract structured information from unstructured literature

and makes semantic reasoning for knowledge discovery. As an intern, you will work on developing and implementing

text mining methods to extract structured information from unstructured literature related to groundwater and

geology data. You will work closely with our team of experts in groundwater modelling to develop a generalized

approach that can be applied to other parameters in future phases. Your responsibilities will include: 1) conducting

literature reviews and analysing existing text mining approaches, 2) developing and implementing text mining

methods to extract structured information from unstructured literature related to groundwater modelling, 3)

collaborating with our team of experts in groundwater modelling to enhance the parameterization, calibration, and

validation of our global groundwater model, 4) Testing and validating the developed tool(s) with relevant datasets

and benchmarks and 5) documenting the workflow and presenting the results in a clear and concise manner. The

required qualifications for this internship are 1) currently enrolled in a Master’s program in computer science, natural

language processing, or related fields, 2) strong programming skills in Python and/or similar languages 3) familiarity

with natural language processing and machine learning methods 4) knowledge of subsurface modelling or related

fields is a plus 5) ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team 6)Excellent communication and

presentation skills in English.

Functie eisen

Enrolled in a relevant MSc program software development, data science, earth observation,

or innovative technologies for modeling or monitoring.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

Program duration is 6 – 9 months starting September 2023.

Interning with Deltares means a monthly student allowance of €550 (depending on your
