Modeling Vessel Behavior in Response to Global Events and Climate Change in the Rotterdam Harbo.
Several events that impacted shipping occurred over the last years (EverGiven, COVID, drought, Ukraine conflict).
This provides us with a unique opportunity to determine how these events have an effect on the behaviour of
ships. The aim of this study is to develop a data-driven approach using reinforcement and imitation learning
techniques to model realistic behavior of vessels in the Rotterdam harbor, taking into consideration the impact
of climate change (2018, 2022 droughts) and other extreme events (the conflict in Ukraine, COVID and the Ever
Given obstruction). This will be accomplished by analyzing real-world data such as AIS and discharge patterns. By
developing agents that can mimic vessel behavior using AIS data, we can simulate the effects of different scenarios,
such as changes in fuel prices or obstructions in the fairway, and study how the port’s operations may be impacted in
the future. The agent will be pre-trained in a simulated environment and fine-tuned through reinforcement learning
to adapt to changes in the system. The findings of this project will be valuable to stakeholders in the Rotterdam
harbor and can be used to optimize the port’s operations, enhance safety measures, and improve sustainability
efforts. In this topic, you can develop your understanding of ports, ships, and simulating behaviour. You will develop
skills in AI, data science, scripting and parallel computing.
