Functie omschrijving

We are looking for a student who is interested in Testing and Designing prototypes related the development of our (new) optical sensor. The sensor functions comparably to a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor, and is hence configured to measure cardiac flow in a non-invasive manner.


The student will be tasked with designing different configurations of I/O components required by the novel sensor, to test different parameters. This will include writing measurement plans and constantly updating/redesigning prototypes. A certain autonomy is required during the internship; the student should be able to interpret obtained results, and use made conclusions to make new plans/prototypes.


The I/O components are ready to use, and designed to allow for an easy implementation into different configurations. Prototypes will most likely be fabricated using a 3D-printer, hence an affinity with compatible design software is strongly advised.


Background info:

In PPG technology, a LED and a photodiode are used to measure changes in blood volume. These volume changes are the direct result of the heartbeat and the saturation level of the patient. Through these changes, the heart rate of the patient can be measured. In our newly designed sensor, we optimize this process by replacing some of the hardware which enables the removal of motion artefacts usually plaguing PPG measurements, thus improving the accuracy of heart-rate measurements. The approach is both novel and supported by research from the TU Delft.

Functie eisen

- Student in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or comparable field.

- Proactive team player with good communication skills.

- A decent experience/affinity in Matlab/python is required, and experience with the Linux command is a plus.

- An interest in biophysics/optics is advised.
